Economy: The federal government did a lot of expanding and building to support the war effort; Military: 74,00 Alabamians were sent to Europe to help fight Central Powers and more than 2,400 Alabamians were killed in action and another 3,861 died from wounds or disease; Alabamians: Farmers grew more food to be sent to allied forces, many women knitted clothing items, others made and wrapped bandages for the war effort and they traveled throughout the state to sell Liberty Bonds to help pay for the war.
